The Sports Craze

Nothing can stop a whole city in its tracks like a sports telecast can. For decades – even centuries – an event like a sports championship has had the ability to make households, pedestrians and workers pause from whatever they are doing. In olden times, this meant gathering at the stadium or the city square to get a good view of a much anticipated match. Today, it means getting as quick as you can to a place where there is a TV set, preferably one connected to a channel that has a live broadcast of the event. If the tournament is indeed very significant, restaurants would tune in their TV sets to the game while some stores would even close shop. Throughout history, the governments of various countries have even declared national holidays on the day of a championship game or a day after their own nation's team won a prestigious international competition. Today, numerous households sit transfixed in front of the television screen to watch significant national and international tournaments.
